Mystery Friday Foto #17 Solved; Moving Willie K’s Deepdale Gatelodge

Did you identify Willie K's former gate lodge on the move?

Identify;

  • The structure and its original location

Commissioned in 1906, this structure was the gate lodge to William K. Vanderbilt Jr's Deepdale estate located on the most southeastern portion of the property on the west side of Lakeville Rd. in Lake Success.

  • Link it to the Vanderbilt Cup Races

W.K. Vanderbilt Jr. created the Cup Races.

  • Approximate year of photo

In 1952, when this photo was taken, the gate lodge was donated by the Schumaker Family to Long Island Jewish Hospital. The St. Philip & St. James Church exchanged a small parcel of land to the Long Island Jewish Hospital for the gate lodge. The lodge, which would be used as a rectory, can be seen here being moved to its current location.

  • Is the structure still standing? If so, where?

The Pope structure still stands 375 feet southwest of its original location on the west side of Lakeville Rd. in Lake Success.

  • Hint: This John Russell Pope designed structure was NOT a Motor Parkway structure, but in very close proximity to the parkway
